Enhancing the status of bicycle traffic
More than 10% of all journeys in Germany are already taken by bicycle – and the trend is upwards. The bicycle is often the quickest means of transport for distances up to 6 km.
As a key element in environmentally friendly mobility, bicycle traffic is also gaining in status in local and regional development and traffic planning,
Signposting as a measure that creates a presence and raises awareness
Sustainable support for bicycle traffic involves, on the one hand, essential measures in the area of the cycle path network. A second essential component is the development and implementation of a consistent, sufficiently extensive and easily comprehensible signposting concept for bicycle traffic.
A signposting system of this sort plays a part in anchoring the bicycle as a mode of transport more firmly in the consciousness of traffic participants through its strong presence on the street and the risk of accident falls along signposted routes.
Involving interest groups in the planning
The need to involve associations, bicycle initiatives and other interest groups is even greater in the area of bicycle traffic planning than in other areas of traffic planning.
This places particular challenges on preparing the ground for decision-making and on the moderation process.
